Summary:

S&H Systems is a single-source, full-service systems integration company delivering dependable material handling systems, software, and post-sale support since 2002. We are looking for a Controls Engineering Manager with a passion for developing material handling solutions on behalf of our customers to enable them to achieve their business goals.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in conveyor control systems, goods-to-man technology, automation applications, and holistic material handling process flow. In this role, you will collaborate with a highly skilled and interdisciplinary team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, operational and execution teams, and customer development teams.

Your ability to handle multiple priorities efficiently, retain a sense of urgency, and meet strict timelines will set you apart. You will be empowered to explore new solutions and technology to harness the power of creativity and technology and translate them into state-of-the-art applications and solutions for customers. You will lead a team of Controls Engineers and report regularly on project status. You will receive full support from the management and leadership teams to grow your technical skills. 

Responsibilities

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Involved in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training Controls Engineers.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the direct reports.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Involved in discipline and performance improvement of direct reports.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, safety and performance standards, and specifications.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate actions to achieve them.
  • Create, maintain, and monitor controls design and programming standards.
  • Partner with remote team members to track progress, success, and gaps in personal and project performance.
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand to plan and organize departmental resources and develop target goals.
  • Assign project personnel to specific phases or aspects of projects including technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and equipment testing in accordance with engineering disciplines and staff abilities.
  • In conjunction with the Project Engineering manager, evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Implement effective Engineering principles, provide technical guidance, and act as a resource for the Controls Engineering group.
  • Work cross functionally with other disciplines within the company to review projects, offer solutions, and hold teams accountable.
  • Plan and direct preparation of layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Observe tests of equipment under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improvement of equipment performance, or to obtain data for further development, standardization, and quality control.
  • Serve as primary Controls Engineering contact responsible for troubleshooting challenges with installed existing equipment, maintenance questions, and upgrades.
  • Estimate controls engineering labor for cost estimating and scheduling.
  • Other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of panel design, panel building, material handling/automation controls integration, and controls standards development.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and commissioning factory automated equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products: Excel, Project, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.).
  • Direct management or responsibility for material handling, automation, or technical projects.
  • Demonstrated design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions, such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
  • Design and implementation experience in industrial electrical design, PLC programming, HMI software design, industrial networking, MCC hardware/software configuration, and closed-loop servo controls.
  • Experience with motion control and robotics.
  • Experience developing and deploying multi-axis robots into a high-volume fulfillment environment.
  • Experience with programming languages IEC 61131-3 (object-oriented extension), C#, etc. HTML5, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++ knowledge a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • BSEE in electro-mechanical design engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in the Controls Engineering field.
  • 3+ years of progressive management experience leading diverse engineering teams at the project management level.
  • Preferred Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration or a related STEM field.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
